How do I “take care of myself” after a massage?

Drink Extra Water

I know... you're so tired of hearing this but let me explain.

There are two parts to this, the first one is that if we imagine your muscles are like a sponge, holding onto water and hydration, I have just spent an hour to an hour and a half wringing the sponge out! It needs to be replenished!

The second part is that when all that water is leaving your muscles, its taking metabolic waste with it! This is a good thing, and we need extra water in your system to support that waste leaving your body.

Eat a good meal

Massage is hard work, and you are probably going to be more tired than you think!

If that means getting your favorite take out or having a plan to cook yourself a good meal, something comforting and nourishing is always going to be beneficial after a massage

Move your body gently

If it was me, I would skip the gym or a very cardio heavy workout after a massage!

I would stick to moment that is gentle, like stretching, a good walk, or the most calm pilates class known to man. Do what's best for your body, and remember that you are gonna be more mobile after a massage, so if you do decide to go to the gym- be careful with those body mechanics!

Prepare for some feelings

Have some friends or loved ones lined up for support!

During massage sometimes something can happen called "emotional release" which is where there is a spontaneous expression of emotion! This can also happen after a massage! Be prepared to ask for support if you need it, and remember it is totally normal to be in those feelings

"Can I drink after a massage?"

I get this question a lot, and to that I say listen to your gut and your body! There is a chance you will be dehydrated and sore, and potentially emotionally raw for the first few hours after a massage.

If you are of legal drinking age I can't tell you to not, but I can encourage you to be easy on yourself and to listen to your body.
